Listening comes before giving. Over the coming weeks, our programme team will hold a series of conversations with widows' groups, head teachers, market associations and community leaders in our priority areas.

The purpose is straightforward: to understand what actually pushes a household under after a bereavement, and which forms of support would be most useful and most respectful.

What the assessment covers

  • The income sources widows rely on, and how quickly they fail
  • Whether children are withdrawn from school, and at what point
  • The cost of a realistic business start-up in each community
  • Existing savings groups, cooperatives and community structures
  • Priorities identified by the women themselves

Why it matters

A programme designed without listening can be well intentioned and still miss the point. The findings will shape our first cycle: which trades we support, which schools we partner with, and how we measure success.

We are grateful to the widows' groups, schools and community leaders who have welcomed this process, and we look forward to sharing what we learn.
